Kamali’i Summer Enrichment Program

Monday, June 3 – Sunday, July 21, 2013

The Summer Enrichment Program begins June 3 and is open to approximately 70 youth ages 10-13. The program uses a variety of teaching methods such as classroom instruction, hand-on activities, group activities, games, song, and hula. Participants keep a journal of their lessons which they keep at the conclusion of the summer. Participants very much look forward to the six huaka‘i (excursions) Hawaiian Kamali‘i plans every summer. Before the huaka‘i, the keiki learn appropriate cultural protocols such as oli (chant) and ho‘okupu (ceremonial offering) which are unique for each area. The Kamali’i Program is funded by grants from the County of Maui, Office of Hawaiian Affairs, private foundations, and by Hawaiian Canoe Club fundraising activities.  The program is free, but off-island excursions cost $40-$100 each.
